Mentors needed for Lawrence Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brother Big Sisters is looking for volunteer community mentors, age 16 and up with a valid driver’s license. There are currently 65 children waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. The commitment is for one year and includes contact for two to three hours a week, three to four weeks each month. The application process usually takes three to four weeks. For more information about becoming a mentor, volunteers can attend an orientation meeting at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesdays or noon Wednesdays at 1525 W. Sixth St., or contact the agency at 843-7359.
Immediate needs
• Lawrence Memorial Hospital Food and Nutrition Services Department needs volunteers who will be assigned to a nursing unit and visit with patients about their lunch and dinner menu selections for that day, and breakfast for the next day. The volunteer will then take those meal requests to the Food and Nutrition Department.Volunteer shifts are available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. every day of the week. Five volunteers are needed each day. Volunteers may sign up for one or more shifts per week. The nutrition ambassadors should be customer service-oriented volunteers with excellent written and verbal communication skills and who have the ability to use a cell phone. Additional training for ambassadors will be given by Food and Nutrition staff.

• Trinity In-Home Care, the largest direct care organization in Douglas County, is expanding its services to include on-site drop-in child care services and in-home, cost-free elderly companionship services. Volunteer positions include child care support volunteer, elderly companion and office/administrative support volunteer. Responsibilities and time commitment vary by position. • The Salvation Army, 946 N.H., is in need of volunteers Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for its feeding program. Volunteers are needed to help prepare, serve and clean. The Salvation Army is open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and volunteers are welcome for any time that they can give during those hours.
