Rosemary O’Malley, a 2009 graduate of Free State High School, was named to the College of Arts and Sciences dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at Loyola University of Chicago, by earning a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

Roger Stone, Eudora, earned a master’s degree in applied linguistics on June 5 from the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics in Dallas.

Matt Patterson, Bishop Seabury Academy’s academic dean/director of college counseling, was accepted into the National Endowment for the Humanities summer program. He will attend a four-week seminar at Harvard University called, “Poetry as a Form of Life, Life as a Form of Poetry,” taught by professor Helen Vendler. In 2006, Patterson participated in the Teaching Shakespeare Institute at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.

AARP Douglas County Chapter 1696 announces new officers for 2010-2011. They are Charles Hill, president; Pattie Johnston, vice president; Russell Bailey, treasurer; and Mary Kanous, secretary. Board members are Ernie Pogge, Bill Pendleton, Hershell Glover, Nancy Boswell and Ellen Harbaugh.

Nicholas Strole, Lawrence, graduated May 24 with a double major in English and French from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Strole, a 2006 graduate of Bishop Seabury Academy, is attending Columbia University NYC in publishing this summer.

Jacob Muselmann was one of 12 students to participate in the annual American Indian Journalism Institute June 16-25 at the Freedom Forum’s Al Neuharth Media Center, on the University of South Dakota’s Vermillion campus. Muselmann has been a copy editing intern at the World Company, designer for The University Daily Kansan and reviewer at Jayplay Magazine. He will receive a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Kansas University in December.

Sarah Henry, a junior at Bishop Seabury Academy and student of Mary Greenwood Johnson, has ranked in the top ten nationally in the Le Grand Concours, a competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students were evaluated for their written, oral and listening comprehension skills in French. More than 100,000 students in all 50 states competed in the 2010 event.

Ella Altenbernd and Kara Roelofs, both of Lawrence, and Cally Owsley of Tonganoxie, were named to the dean’s list for the 2010 spring semester at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Altenbernd, a junior, is a psychology and history major. Roelofs, a senior, is a nursing major. Owsley, a junior, is a biology and political science major.

Jennifer Hornbaker and Mark Jongman-Sereno, both of Lawrence, were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at Iowa State University, in Ames, by earning a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

Hornbaker is a journalism and mass communication major. Jongman-Sereno is a pre-architecture major.

Jennalyn Phillips of Wellsville and Jalinn Sommer of Baldwin City are two of seven recipients of Provost Scholarships awarded by Ottawa University. Phillips and Sommer will receive a three-quarter tuition scholarship, as well as other benefits and honors, during their four-year educational tenure at OU, a value of at least $60,000.

Phillips, a graduate of Wellsville High School, is the daughter of Rick Phillips and Carol Phillips. She is scheduled to attend OU in the fall and plans to major in business administration.

Sommer, a graduate of Baldwin High School, is the daughter of Douglas and Donna Sommer. She is scheduled to attend OU in the fall and plans to major in biology.

Andrew Keegan, Lawrence, was awarded a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering May 23 from Marquette University in Milwaukee.
