Wayward pet found after 3-week excursion

A sign outside Carol Armstrong’s Lawrence home informs friends and neighbors of some very good news: “Ruby is Found.”

Very little is known about Ruby’s adventure, which began more than three weeks ago when the six-pound Brussels griffon ran off from Armstrong’s pet sitter while she was out of town.

A drawing of Ruby by her owner Carol Armstrong. Ruby went missing three weeks ago, but was found Friday several miles away in good condition.

“My neighborhood ran after her,” Armstrong said. But Ruby was off.

In those 22 days, Ruby wandered several miles away, safely crossing both the busy Iowa and 23rd streets, and lived off the generosity of residents feeding her hot dogs in a neighborhood west of Iowa Street.

But, she’s home now.

“Just a miracle,” Armstrong said. “She looks fine, just a little tired.”

Armstrong said she posted fliers across town, and with the help of friends, placed ads on Craigslist and posted Ruby’s information on Facebook.

On Friday, she received a call from a woman who had seen one of the fliers and reported that there was a small dog who’d been wandering her neighborhood.

Armstrong went to the neighborhood, where she was reunited with Ruby.

“I called her, and she came to me,” she said.

Armstrong, like any caring pet owner, said she feared the worst.

“I didn’t want to give up hope,” she said. “But, that’s a long time.”

Several friends have stopped by to ask about Ruby, and Armstrong said she’s still getting concerned phone calls.

She said she appreciated the support and wants everyone to know that “Ruby is back.”
