Program for homeless offers meeting Monday

The Lawrence community is invited to a meeting Monday to learn about SOAR, a program that assists homeless individuals in obtaining Social Security benefits.

SOAR stands for Supplemental Security Income/Social Security Disability Income, Outreach, Access and Recovery.

Only about 15 percent of individuals who are homeless have these benefits because the application process is so complicated.

The meeting will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday at Independence Inc., 2001 Haskell Ave., which provides advocacy, services and education for people with disabilities.

The speaker will be Beth Wilkins, a board member of the Coalition for Homeless Concerns. She has had training on the SOAR program.
