A 28-year-old man accused of committing multiple sex crimes against a child made his first appearance in Douglas County District Court on Thursday afternoon.

The man had little to say as he answered to two counts of rape of a child, one count of aggravated criminal sodomy, one count of indecent liberties with a child and one count of sexual exploitation of a child. Prosecutors allege the crimes occurred with a 6-year-old Lawrence girl who was known to the suspect.

The Lawrence Journal-World spoke with the mother of the suspect, who says the charge of sexual exploitation of a child stems from a family member finding a DVD containing child porn images. It’s a find that she says shocked the family.

“He goes to my second son and he watched a couple minutes of it and he had to go to the bathroom and throw up. It was that bad,” she said. “It just blew me away.”

Four of the charges fall under “Jessica’s Law,” which originated in Florida in 2005 and aims at handing down maximum sentences to child sex offenders. Four of the five charges in this case carry a penalty of 25 years to life in prison.

The man will make his next appearance in court at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

It is Journal-World policy not to name suspects in sex crimes unless they have been convicted.
