Douglas County Emergency Management is participating in a large-scale disaster exercise along with several other city and county response agencies and is looking for victims/actors to make the event more realistic. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29. Most “victims” will stage near Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Some of the roles are written out and some are not. We would like to have 50 or more “victims,” particularly volunteers who are fluent in other languages. Volunteers need to be 18 or older. Lunch will be provided and all volunteers will get a T-shirt.
For more information or to sign up, contact Kate Dinneen at kdinneen@douglas-county.com or Sheila Meggison at smeggison@douglas-county.com, or leave a message at 841-6271.
Immediate needs
• Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care needs volunteers who can work directly with patients and their families by providing companionship, respite care, and/or relief for primary caregivers. Volunteers must commit to one year of service and be available for regular once-weekly assignments of two to four hours. Volunteers need to be caring, compassionate, flexible and good listeners. Mandatory hospice volunteer training will be provided. No prior medical knowledge is necessary for this very rewarding experience. To volunteer, contact Sarah Rooney, volunteer coordinator, at 331-4812 or sarahro@vna-ks.org
• The Salvation Army, 946 N.H., is in need of volunteers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for its feeding program. Volunteers help prepare and serve food, and clean up. The Salvation Army is open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Anyone interested in helping can contact Liz Coleman at 843-4188 or liz_coleman@usc.salvationarmy.org.
• Project Lively, a program of the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, seeks volunteers to help seniors by assisting with house maintenance, yard work and housecleaning. If interested in helping out local seniors, contact Rebecca Holmes, care manager, at 843-3060 or rholmes@ldchealth.org.
