Market dogs

To the editor:

Recent visits to the Lawrence Farmers’ Market on Saturdays have convinced me further that dogs don’t belong there.

The market gets so congested at peak hours, it is hard to walk through the crowd. Dog owners make the matter worse especially when they don’t pay attention to their dogs on leashes.

I’ve been to many farmers’ markets in different states where dogs are banned. They are banned because of health concerns where food is served openly. It is not allowed in grocery stores or restaurants in Lawrence unless they are service dogs. Why are they allowed at the Lawrence Farmers’ Market where food is served?

I was bitten once on the knee by a dog on a leash. The dog evidently thought the owner and I were too close to each other. The wound drew blood and I fell backwards, bruising my tailbone.

I don’t dislike dogs, but it seems like a lot of dog owners think everyone likes dogs. Dog owners’ attention should be on their dogs whenever in a crowd.

Does someone have to get sick, bitten or hurt by tripping over a leash before something is done?
