Sculpture exhibition kicks off this weekend

Lawrence’s 22nd annual Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition will officially kick off on Saturday.

The eight sculptures already are in place, but a formal opening for the show will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H. The event will include brief remarks from the show’s juror, and a guided walking tour.

“We get submissions from all over the country now. We feel like it is a sign that we are doing something right with this show,” said Jane Pennington, who served as an organizer for the show for the Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission.

Pennington said about 30 artists submitted work for the show.

Eight were chosen, and four are from Lawrence and one is from Tonganoxie.

Artists receive about a $700 stipend for participating in the event, Pennington said.
