Weather threat leads to postponement of ‘World’s Largest Community Workout’

Lawrence’s second “World’s Largest Community Workout” has been postponed due to weather.

The workout has been rescheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Kansas University’s Shenk Sports Complex at the northwest corner of 23rd and Iowa streets.

Marilyn Hull, an event organizer, said they didn’t want to put anyone at risk. She also said it would be difficult for such a large group of people to seek shelter in a timely manner if storms approached.

“We didn’t want to chance it,” she said.

Matt Elwell, 6News chief meteorologist, said the chance of severe thunderstorms would be cutting it extremely close to the workout.

“Many of the storms will have a high probability of hitting severe criteria for hail and high wind with frequent lightning in the region a virtual certainty,” he said. “The fact that we could have hundreds of people in an open field would make it a bad idea for lightning alone, not to mention the danger of trying to clear that many people out of the area during a severe thunderstorm.”
