Communication camp calls for volunteers

Kansas University is asking for volunteers to help at the Sertoma-Schiefelbusch Communication Camp, which runs June 28 to July 9, with no camp on July 5. The camp brings together youths with and without communication challenges to explore their world and improve their communication skills while participating in camp activities. The camp is staffed by students and faculty from the Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. Volunteers are needed to help set up and facilitate the camp activities. Volunteers must be 16 or older; no special skills are needed as training or guidance will be provided. Volunteers can sign on for a day, a week or both weeks, for either morning sessions, 9 a.m. to noon, afternoon sessions, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., or both. Immediate needs

• Headquarters Counseling Center is coordinating a charity bike ride and walk, The HQCC Life Support Rally 2010, this month. Volunteers are needed for the registration desk, to staff rest stops, as well as to help with setup and cleanup before and after the event. The rally is Saturday, June 19, at Sunflower School, with registration and start times from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Volunteers will be needed for two to three-hour shifts from about 6 a.m. through 2 p.m. To sign up, contact Tyler D. • There are numerous volunteer opportunities for the 2010 Tour of Lawrence in early July. T-shirts and meals will be provided to all volunteers. Course setup on Saturday morning, July 3, starts at 5 a.m. at Wescoe Hall at Kansas University, with the KU Campus Circuit Race beginning at 9 a.m. On July 4, setup for the Downtown Criterium begins at 8 a.m., with the first race at 11 a.m. Course marshals will be needed on both Saturday and Sunday, and other needs include registration, volunteer table and officials’ assistants. Tear-down will begin immediately following the conclusion of racing each day: approximately 9:30 p.m. Friday, following the Eldridge Hotel Street Sprints downtown, and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. • This summer brings a chance to volunteer with Special Olympics Kansas. There are a number of opportunities available, including the KC Metro Golf Tournament, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. July 8 in Olathe; the KC Metro Softball Tournament, from 7:30 a.m. to noon or noon to 4:30 p.m. on July 17 in Basehor; or the KC Metro Soccer and Bocce Tournament from noon to 6 p.m. on Sept. 12 in Olathe.
