Willow Center may occupy new building

A Lawrence nonprofit that serves victims of domestic abuse may have a new east Lawrence headquarters by the end of the month.

City commissioners Tuesday evening unanimously agreed to approve a $1-per-year lease for The Willow Domestic Violence Center to occupy the city-owned building previously used by Health Care Access.

Sarah Terwelp, executive director for Willow, said she hopes to move the organization’s administrative offices to the building at 1920 Moodie Road by the end of June.

The organization, which previously was known as Women’s Transitional Care Services, currently is located in the United Way building. But Terwelp said the current offices provide no space for private meetings with clients of the organization.

The new building will be used solely for administrative purposes. It will not serve as a shelter for domestic abuse victims.

The building became available after Health Care Access moved to a new location near Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
