Fire efforts

To the editor:

The Lecompton, Kanwaka, Wakarusa, Baldwin, Willow Springs and Kentucky townships volunteer fire departments deserve high praise for their efforts fighting the major fire in Lecompton on July 26. Their efforts saved the historic United Methodist Church, which contains the 1885 grand piano used in Lane University, the parsonage, post office and nearby residences for future generations to enjoy.

Firefighters fought smoke and tremendous heat during the height of the blaze.
