• The Council of State Governments has named Rep. Tom Sloan, R-Lawrence, co-chairman of its National Transmission Siting Advisory Panel. Sloan is chairman of the Vision 2020 Committee and a member of the Energy & Utilities Committee. He is vice chairman of CSG’s Environment Committee, member of the National Wind Coordinating Collaborative’s Steering Committee, member of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Electricity Advisory Committee, and a member of the GridWise Architecture Council.

• The Farm Service Agency announces Aug. 2 is the deadline to certify spring-seeded crops, Conservation Reserve Program, and the final date to request a farm reconstitution. Noninsured Crop Assistance Program acreages must be certified by Aug. 2 or 15 days prior to the onset of harvest or grazing. To apply for FSA benefits or certify acreages, contact the Farm Service Agency at your local USDA Service Center.

• Babcock Place, 1700 Mass., will host Traditional Dances in Contemporary Kansas, a presentation and discussion by Joan Stone, at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 3. The free program is open to the community.

• Ballard Community Services announces that the architectural firm Gould Evans will design the new Petey Cerf Early Education Center for Children & Families and the Peridian Group will serve as consultant on the project. The Petey Cerf Center will be a LEED certified early-education facility for 88 infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The facility will be at Fourth and Florida streets, replacing the former DCCCA First Step House.

• Jocelyn Lyons has accepted the position of executive director of Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging. Lyons, most recently the agency’s team leader, has been with JAAA for 33 years. JAAA provides services to seniors in Douglas, Shawnee and Jefferson counties.
