Share the road
To the editor:
Last week, a few members of the Lawrence Bicycle Club were riding on Louisiana Street near 1100 Road when a man in a black pickup truck pulled alongside them, shouted at them to ride single file and threatened to run them over. Before leaving the scene, the driver did, in fact, strike one of the cyclists, knocking him off the road. The rider sustained minor injuries, and his bike sustained a good deal of damage. The driver fled and has not been found.
As a cyclist and member of the bike club, I would like to ask the automobile-driving public to share the road with cyclists as the law requires. What this person did is inexcusable, stupid and dangerous. Cyclists do not always ride in single file because riding two abreast makes them easier to see and less likely to be hit. It also means that if an unbalanced or inattentive person comes along and hits a rider, he or she does not crash into another rider in front of him or her.
Please drivers, we have had enough cyclists get injured and die that we should have learned by now that the consequences for losing your patience is dire. Share the road. It’s the law.
