Volunteers needed at counseling center

Headquarters Counseling Center has two volunteer information meetings scheduled next month.

The meetings will be from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 25 and Aug. 30 at the Lawrence Public Library Auditorium, 707 Vt. Please attend to find out more about how to join the amazing group of dedicated volunteers who help staff the center day in and day out. Immediate needs

• The Douglas County Fair is in need of volunteer building attendants to ensure the safety of 4-H and FFA projects during this year’s fair. The 4-H and FFA programs teach leadership, citizenship and life skills through projects that are showcased at the fair. Assistance is needed for the following shifts: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 4 and Aug. 5; 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 6; and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 7. • The state Long Term Care Ombudsman Program will be providing training for people interested in becoming a LTC ombudsman volunteer. The training will be at the Kansas Advocates for Better Care office at 913 Tenn., Suite 2, beginning on July 26. Training will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday and Thursday evenings for four weeks, followed by facility tours and facility placement. The program’s mission is to advocate for the well-being, safety and rights of residents of Kansas long-term care facilities by assisting them in attaining the highest possible quality of life. • The Villages Inc. is seeking a “concrete crew” with the skills and tools needed to install a small concrete basketball court at a family group home south of Lawrence. The Villages takes care of high-needs, troubled kids in a home-like environment. Having a safe, supervised spot to release energy and tension will make a big difference in the lives of these young men and women. For more information about The Villages, visit thevillagesinc.org. • Lawrence Meals on Wheels is in need of regular volunteers, who can commit to a route once a week, and substitute volunteers, who can fill in on routes when needed. Routes are available Monday through Friday. They start at Lawrence Memorial Hospital at 11:20 a.m. and take about an hour. There are currently seven open routes and eight clients on a waiting list to receive services, which cannot begin until more volunteers join the program.
