Lawrence may go back to former primary system

Future Lawrence City Commission elections likely will revert back to an old system that encouraged city primaries.

Commissioners agreed to draft an ordinance that would require a city primary if there are more than six people who file for City Commission seats. A change in state law caused the last City Commission to not have a primary unless there were at least 10 candidates.

The city is able to exempt itself from the state law, and a majority of commissioners said they believed the old system worked better because a primary allowed voters more time to get to know candidates.
