Residents in an east Eudora neighborhood have installed video cameras in their backyards in an attempt to catch whoever is responsible for a string of vandalisms.

People living in the neighborhood around 11th and Ash streets said they’ve had property damaged, their cars broken into and mailboxes destroyed, and Eudora police suspect that two gas leaks in the area were also acts of vandalism.

“When I first moved here, for the first year, I felt comfortable,” said resident Mark Farr. Farr moved to Eudora from a larger city two years ago, and said he didn’t expect to have this type of problem. “The last eight to 12 months I’ve been seeing all the stuff that’s been going on in the neighborhood and I just don’t feel right with it.”

Farr’s neighbor and brother-in-law, Jacob McAlexander, arrived home around 8:30 Tuesday morning to find Farr’s back window broken out.

The men had installed video cameras around their homes but rain destroyed them, prompting McAlexander to spend more money to get better cameras.

“They cover a wide variety of land,” he said. “That way we can get things on video and that way we can see who is doing what.”

The men installed 16 cameras in their backyards and back porches, and even hid one in a bird feeder.

Farr said he’s not just trying to protect his property.

“My kids play all around through here, but I won’t let them do it without me outside watching,” he said. “It’s just hard to tell what’s going to happen next.”
