Letters to the Editor

Too judgmental

July 4, 2010

To the editor:

Arnie Rodgers’ letter to the Journal-World Wednesday was too judgmental of the efforts of Dolph Simons Jr. in his Saturday Column. Arnie and I are 180 degrees apart in our view of the Kansas University academic-athletic department situation.

Dolph is truly a champion for KU. His concern about the falling rank of KU in polls is, indeed, shared by many. The Simons family has always supported what is best for KU and Lawrence.

The Saturday Column, the news in general, and the obituaries (I’m nearly 90) are my favorite columns.

So do I. Great letter. There are simply too many leftist twits in Lawrence who find something wrong with Dolph's column no matter what he says. No person seriously interested in KU and its history can deny that KU's stature has shrunk over the last 25 years, that serious questions exist as to whether KU has had effective leadership during that time, that we have lost substantial numbers of prestigious faculty and that our relationship with the Kansas legislature has been rocky for far too long. Some KU alumni have been far too condescending toward K-State, which has kicked our butts on the PR front with many citizens of Kansas. Both KU administrators and so-called prominent alumni should have learned from what K-State has done within Kansas, but haven't. Someone needs to be saying what Dolph has said. The question is whether the egos of the people he's addressing will allow for accomplishing what's needed to return KU to flagship prominence.

You really need to take the lid off that shoebox you live in and climb out into the fresh air.
