Sophia Racy, 4, of Lawrence, was getting all pumped up wearing a KU cheerleading costume for her bike race on Sunday July 4, 2010 in downtown Lawrence. Sunday was the final day of the Tour of Lawrence Bike race.

Some youngsters dressed up for the Tour of Lawrence kids bike races, such as Ben Slimmer, 10, who donned sunglasses and sideburns as part of his Elvis look.

Others decked out their bikes, such as 6-year-old Enzo Norton-Mitchell, who might have won a “most patriotic” prize with stars and stripes on his bike and his American flag.

After a weekend of more serious bike riding, it was time for the kids and their parents to have some fun, as the little cyclists – sometimes with mom and dad running along – raced through downtown Lawrence in 50-meter, 100-meter and one-mile races in Sunday’s free kids bike races sponsored by Growing Smiles Pediatric Dentistry.

Salvador Good, 7, admitted to some pre-race jitters, but said he was ready, since he’d prepared like a pro. The five-year bike riding veteran spent the morning pumping up his tires and watching the Tour de France and his favorite cyclist, Alberto Contador, for inspiration.

Andrew Slimmer, 12, meanwhile, sporting a cool double-decker bike, knew his high-riding cycle wouldn’t allow him to take first place, but he was OK with that.

“Just going to have some fun,” he said.

But the thrill of winning a bike race left other participants, such as 3-year-old Tristan Prier, speechless. He was all smiles and head nods, but at a loss for words, after he took first place in the youngest age group in the 50-meter race.

Minutes later, 5-year-old Ayden Ammann blazed past the finish line on his Hot Wheels bike to take first in his age group.

He credited his bike for the big win.

“It’s fast,” Ayden said.

But what’s his secret to making the bike go so fast? Intense training? A good breakfast?

“I don’t have one,” said Ayden, admiring his medal.
