Kansas residents recover a record $14.6 million in unclaimed property

? The state treasurer’s office says Kansas residents recovered a record amount of unclaimed property from the state in the past year.

Treasurer Dennis McKinney said Friday his office returned $14.6 million in unclaimed property to nearly 54,000 Kansans in the fiscal year that ended Wednesday. That’s a 34 percent increase over the amount returned in 2009, and beats the previous one-year record of $10.8 million worth of property.

The treasurer’s office holds property left by estates, utility companies or safe deposit boxes until it’s claimed by the rightful owners. Interest earned on the unclaimed property is returned to the state general fund.
