Positive gesture

To the editor:

Positive behavior by adult role models often goes unnoticed.

Lawrence High School played Topeka West in a boys’ basketball game last week in Topeka. Prior to the game, two Topeka West players received scholastic awards just before the teams were introduced. When the game ended an hour and a half later, the players and coaches from both teams did the customary handshaking. I watched from the stands as Lawrence High coach Mike Lewis sought out and spoke with both of the players from Topeka West who had received the scholastic awards.

One of them was my grandson, who was not even suited up due to an injury. I asked him later what was said. He reported that the LHS coach had congratulated him and his teammate on their scholastic awards. I was amazed and pleased that he had even noticed the presentation before the game, let alone remembered and took the time to personally acknowledge their achievements after the game ended. I know nothing about Coach Lewis’ coaching skills, but I can testify that he has exemplary people skills.

Good luck to Coach Lewis and his Lions this season.
