KDHE investigating recycling center

A recycling business at 12th and Haskell is under investigation after six vehicle fires were reported there earlier this week.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is investigating a Lawrence recycling center, after several cars caught on fire there Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Bargain Center, 1146 Haskell Ave., just before 5 p.m. Wednesday where six vehicles in the salvage yard were on fire.

KDHE officials were on the scene Thursday, investigating complaints that the business is “not properly managing auto fluids.”

A spokeswoman for the KDHE said the investigation is on-going.

This business is not a good neighbor. Has not been for some time.

Trash and debris blow into neighbors yards and along side the road. This place is basically a dump.

When this location was primarily an auto service center the place was kept impeccable.

I would challenge KDHE to schedule surprise visits several times a year to this operation. This is certainly NOT the first KDHE investigation to this establishment. This is not the first auto fire.

There are multiple neighborhood complaints attached to this establishment.

KDHE doesn't have enough people to check on all the places that should be checked, let alone check one several times a year. There is only one half-time person to enforce erosion (Clean Water Act) violations from construction erosion for the whole state.
