Carnegie expansion

City commissioners on Tuesday unanimously agreed to accept a $1.4 million bid to expand the former Carnegie Library building.

The project at Ninth and Vermont will involve adding a 2,000-square-foot addition to bring the century-old building up to codes. Plans call for offices for the Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area, in addition to more classroom and event rental space for Lawrence Parks and Recreation.

Shawnee-based AB Bradley won the bid for the work, which should be completed by late summer or early fall.
