Carnegie expansion

January 27, 2010

City commissioners on Tuesday unanimously agreed to accept a $1.4 million bid to expand the former Carnegie Library building.

The project at Ninth and Vermont will involve adding a 2,000-square-foot addition to bring the century-old building up to codes. Plans call for offices for the Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area, in addition to more classroom and event rental space for Lawrence Parks and Recreation.

Shawnee-based AB Bradley won the bid for the work, which should be completed by late summer or early fall.

LJW staff, where is the rest of the story?

Where is the $1.4 million coming from? What are the city's funding sources for this amount?

Since the Carnegie Library is on the National Register of Historic Places, has the addition been approved? Has it been presented to the Historic Resources Commission?
