Guy Kirby Montgomery, a 2006 graduate of Eudora High School, earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and nonprofit leadership studies, with a grade-point average of 3.8, from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., in December. While at Rockhurst, he was awarded several scholarships and internships, was president and social chairman of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Student Activities Board member, Pre-Law Club secretary and Rockhurst University Public Relations Department cinematographer. He is currently studying for a Master of Business Administration degree in the Rockhurst Helzberg School of Management and has accepted a position as a business consultant with Cerner in the Vision Department.
The Johnson County Community College Model United Nations team received two awards for its policy position papers on Cuba and Jamaica at the 2009 American Model United Nations Conference held Nov. 21-24 in Chicago.
Sixteen JCCC students competed against 150 other universities and colleges in North and South America. Area team members are: Joshua McConico, Bonner Springs; and Amanda Jones and Kumar Shrestha, both of Lawrence.
Stephanie Nystrom, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2009 semester at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, by earning a grade-point average between 3.50 and 3.99.
Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department gave its annual Holiday Luncheon and Teamwork Recognition Dec. 18 at the Community Building.
During the luncheon, Tom Wilkerson Teamwork Awards were presented to Bobby Wilson, administrative support at the Community Building; Jeff Curtis, part-time employee at Holcom Park Recreation Center and baseball scorekeeper; and Phil Wente, volunteer disc jockey for special populations programs.
The Teamwork Award was renamed in 2002 to honor Tom Wilkerson who served as assistant director of the department until his retirement in October 2002. The award has three categories. Two categories honor an individual or group of employees who exemplify teamwork in both full-time and part-time capacities; the third is given to an outside agency or city department, individual or group who has assisted the department in obtaining success.
Other nominees included:
Category I: Jim Beebe, Mark Graves and Heath Bowman, all in the forestry division; Brian Sharp, electrical technician; and Jimmy Gibbs, aquatic manager.
Category II: Susan Pomeroy, part-time fitness instructor for the Recreation Division and the Aquatics Division.
Category III: Walt Ward, engineering aide; Tracy Williams, wellness coordinator for the school district; Frank Williams, flower planting volunteer; Tom Orzulak and the Street Division of the Public Works Department; the Utilities Department of the Engineering Division including Bob Brower, Phillip Ciesielski and Shelley Schupp; and the Public Works Department of the Engineering Division including Matt Bond, David Cronin, Chuck Soules, Shoeb Uddin, John Vannicola, Walt Ward and David Woosley.
Independence Community College has announced its president’s and dean’s honor rolls for the fall 2009 semester. To be named to the president’s list, students must earn a 4.0 grade-point average; those earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher were named to the dean’s list.
Danielle Bird and Sarah Plowman, both of Lawrence, were named to the president’s honor roll; and Jessica Waggoner, Baldwin City, was named to the dean’s list.
Lauren Kelly, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2009 semester at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., by earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
