— Tyshawn Taylor’s days of posting controversial messages on Facebook appear to be over.

“You will never ask me another question about that,” Kansas University coach Bill Self said Friday during a pre-Iowa State media session in Allen Fieldhouse.

“It won’t be a problem from this point forward. Ever,” he added, strongly implying he has told Taylor to cease and desist all social-media postings with severe consequences if the sophomore guard disobeys orders.

Self said he had talked to Taylor about rumors that the player indicated on Facebook he was considering leaving KU. This is the same Taylor who posted comments after the basketball team’s fight with the football team early first semester.

“I don’t think that that’s even remotely true,” Self said of Taylor Facebooking about a possible transfer. “But, if he has said that, which I do not think to be the case, then that’s the reason why he’s not playing well. Because his head’s not right. But I don’t believe he said that.

“What I think has happened is, he’s probably frustrated, probably said some things because of his frustration. Because of his popularity and things like this, everybody can take anything that any one of my players say and spin it in a direction that it wants to be (spun).

“I’m not remotely concerned about that. If any of our players are thinking about that (transferring), trust me, I will be the first to help them find a place when the season is over.”

This current flap began when a fan posted on the Internet that Taylor’s Facebook had comments about his frustration with his current situation at KU.

“Some of the things posted on Facebook ... I heard yesterday somebody reported on Facebook, but didn’t even know the exact deal, what they were reporting,” Self said. “I’m not going to even comment on that, because I’ve talked to him about that. That’s a non-factor.”

Regarding Taylor’s role, Self said: “I think he’s been in a funk. I think he’s a good player that hasn’t played as good as he’s capable of playing. He’d be the first to agree with that.

“I thought against Baylor, he played well defensively and gave us some good minutes against LaceDarius (Dunn). He’s had a little bit of a sophomore funk, so to speak. You know what? I told Tyshawn, what people sometimes don’t realize, we’ve played 50 percent of our games, but 95 percent of our season remains, because nobody cares what you do in November and December. So we’ve still got 90, 95 percent of our season left, so he has a chance to impact that last half, that last part that everybody cares about in a big way. His head’s got to be right. I think he’s on the verge of having that come through.”

Taylor was at Friday’s practice but was not available for comment.

Junior Cole Aldrich said players have been told to watch what they write on Facebook and Twitter.

“I wouldn’t say (we’ve been) barred. We are just kind of under a microscope from all coaches and the guys on the team to make sure what it says (isn’t inappropriate),” Aldrich said.

“It goes for anybody, not just us but any athlete. In this day and age, the Internet is so popular.”

Aldrich said some players have found other ways to voice their opinions on matters.

“Some guys I know have written small journals they just keep to themselves after practice,” Aldrich said. “To reflect on practice. I think our guys have matured over the past weeks and months on the court and off the court. I don’t think it’s a problem.”

This, that

Aldrich said he had several relatives planning to drive from Bloomington, Minn., to Ames for today’s 1 p.m game against Iowa State. His late grandmother Ann’s memorial service was Friday in Northfield, Minn. ... Sherron Collins attended the memorial service of his great grandfather, Robert, Thursday in Chicago and made it back for Friday afternoon’s practice. ... Iowa State lost a key player this week when Lucca Staiger (9.4 ppg, 48-of-113 from three) decided to return to Germany to play pro ball. ... Senior Marquis Gilstrap averages 14.9 ppg. ... KU will play Missouri on Monday in Allen Fieldhouse and K-State Saturday in Manhattan. “We’re concentrating on Iowa State. We know they have a great team and are always tough to play, especially there,” Aldrich said. “We have some tough ones with big rivals coming up, but we’re trying to focus on Iowa State.”

Not a fan of his attitude or his time on the court; he thinks far too much of himself for what he shows us in games. And frankly, for posting all of this stuff on facebook, especially that he's frustrated about his "situation" (aka, not getting much playtime...refer to previous comment about his ego) he sounds like a downright moron. Wouldn't be disappointed to see him leave.

Robert Rauktis 5 years, 6 months ago

Why would coach even comment on this crap? It gives it the credibility it doesn't deserve.

Teenagers know everything. Hasn't Self learned in dealing that with these prima donnas?

shadowbox66044 5 years, 6 months ago

Well, with Collins playing at an elevated level, and Brady getting more minutes because of his great all-around play, Tyshawn's minutes were bound to go down. With that being said, he probably wasn't prepared mentally for his reduction in minutes. And, maybe that's Tyshawn's problem. Also keep in mind his ego probably got bigger when he started for the US under 19 team.

alm77 5 years, 6 months ago

Oh, no! A kid expresses his inner frustration, possibly articulating extreme solutions on a social networking site! Big. Deal.

braverthanu 5 years, 6 months ago

Bye Bye Ty Yawn!...we can give his scholarship to a much better player.

garyr 5 years, 6 months ago

Don't let the door hit you on the way out Tyshawn! You could always take a short trip west and play for Coach Martin and all the "thugs" in Manhattan.

xclusive85 5 years, 6 months ago

HEY, guys, this is still a KU ball player and student. He probably needs some support rather than criticism. If Self is behind this kid, and he is behind him, then he will do fine. Maybe fake KU fans like you guys are the reason the kid wants to leave. He probably knows that he hasn't been playing well. Let his coach tell him, and you support him regardless!

frank mcguinness 5 years, 6 months ago

Sounds like another J.R. Giddens who coincidently just got demoted back to the D League.

Get your head on right tyshawn and you can probably play some pro basketball.

Coach self can help you achieve that goal. Don't listen to coach self and you can find yourself playing ball in the Ukraine.

jaywalker 5 years, 6 months ago

Agree with you, xclusive.

Tyshawn will be fine. All these people commenting negatively on something that can't even be confirmed - losers.

frank mcguinness 5 years, 6 months ago

P.S. I sincerely hope he stays as I think he is just in a funk and is definitly an asset to KU basketball.

Oh and get yer head on straight there tyshawn.

Rusty Coffey 5 years, 6 months ago

There ain't one of us who have post a comment that has any idea what that young man is going through! We're just simple people that call ourselves fans. Let's leave it that way and cheer our Hawks on! Rock Chalk!!!

georgiahawk 5 years, 6 months ago

You guys are sooooo smart! You all know everything that is necessary to make a final judgement on Ty! I am impressed with your supreme intelligence, not so impressed on you being a fan though!

SteelHorseRider 5 years, 6 months ago

agree with you georgiahawk....

I think Tyshawn is overall doing a great job. Big funk last three games, but he was super hot the previous seven. All players go through stretches. He'll bounce back!

stephenj 5 years, 6 months ago

Tyshawn "Point Plankn" Taylor, maybe you can work at Best Buy with B-Nash. I'm going to go fb about this now ttyl

ralphralph 5 years, 6 months ago

Taylor has great physical skills ... like speed and quickness you can't teach or learn. He has a real bad habit of playing beyond himself lately ... picture him coming across half-court, leaping in the air, then looking around trying to figure out what he's going to do with the ball (usually throwing it away at that point). If he would spend more time studying the mental part of the game, and less hanging around on the web, it would serve him well.

jonas_opines 5 years, 6 months ago

He needs four years, but if he works at it he'll be Good at the end of that time. Bound to be more minutes next year. He's obviously young, but he can grow up. Or he might not.

Anyway, something tells me he won't be easing these comments.

jimmyjms 5 years, 6 months ago

Anybody who thinks Tyshawn is a D-leaguer is, well, dumb.

Taylor can ball, and he's given this team some great minutes. He's young, folks. Give the kid a break. He posted something on FB?

And?

CLARKKENT 5 years, 6 months ago

GARYR---HE COULD NOT MAKE THE TEAM IN MANHATTEN.

THERE IS THE "THUG" WORD AGAIN,, IT DOES DESCRIBE HIM WELL!!!!!!!!

7texdude 5 years, 6 months ago

First, fellas, relax. Let coach Self handle this.

Self is upset because Tyshawn is talking or blogging too much. First, he told the press he was not sure of his role on the team. This infuriated Self because his starting point guard said publically he doesn't know his role. So, Self gave the ball to Sherron more. He is a guy who knows what to do. Then, Taylor posted something on his Facebook page when he was told to never post anything again after the football fight.

Finally, he is not playing well right now. He is in a slump. You do not do this kind of stuff when you're not playing well. If he gets out of Self's doghouse, make the plays and things will be fine again.

Kryptonite 5 years, 6 months ago

Really Clarkkent.....he couldn't make the team??? What about your super star Wally Judge who barely sees the floor. I am pretty sure he would make the team. By the way I am not sure are you a KU fan or a KSUCK fan??? Judging by your posts I can't tell.

jimmyjms 5 years, 6 months ago

I'm pretty sure that TT would start at any school in the country.

You KSU fans sure get crazy when you win a game or two.

Scruggsy 5 years, 6 months ago

To me, this seems like a case of a kid letting his attitude get in the way of his talent. Coach Self obviously loves the kid's talent, as he has been a starter since early in his freshman year.

But yet he is apparently always in the doghouse, starting trouble and running his mouth complaining. What exactly does he have to be unhappy about?

After allegedly being the cause of the hoops/ football mayhem, and now this obvious case of mouth running on Facebook, at some point you have to say enough is enough.

Because next year, as a Junior and 3 year starter, he will be a leader of the team. And nothing can ruin chemistry/ a season like a bad attitude from a leader...

puddleglum 5 years, 6 months ago

tyshawn, do as coach says and you will be rewarded. we know you can play, the scouts know it too. Don't worry about anything other than doing your part to help the team. oh, and beating mizzery.

CLARKKENT 5 years, 6 months ago

KYRPTO--

I WILL LET YOU KNOW AFTER KU/K-STATE GAME.

MY MISTAKE ON MY POST, HE COULD NOT START AT K-STATE.

WHO THE HECK WAS TALKING ABOUT WALLY JUDGE. I CAN AGREE THAT HE SUCKS.

anon1958 5 years, 6 months ago

Oh no! Dissent in the Jayhawk nation must be crushed! Hooray for censoring the horrible player! Thank God we have a fascist coach and AD to crush any tiny amount of personality or normal teenage angst exhibited by a player on our beloved, perfect, peerless, financially lucrative professional basketball farm team.

xclusive85 5 years, 6 months ago

anon, you must not know what a team is about. dissention ruins teams. i am sure that everyone on the KU basketball team wants to win a national championship.

scruggsy, tyshawn wasn't the cause of the fight with the football players. That jersey chaser was.

Bobo Fleming 5 years, 6 months ago

hit the wall sophmore jinx. Hope he snaps out of it. Sometime take a look at Heinrich's sophmore stats. Not that great. So have a little patience.

jonas_opines 5 years, 6 months ago

Anon, I hope that was trolling, cuz otherwise it was just dumb.

Jersey_Girl 5 years, 6 months ago

First, it almost sounds like what he posted is alleged. Self didn't see it and it doesn't sound like anyone here saw it. Second, even if he did post something about being frustrated with his playing time, he's only a sophomore. I admit I don't follow KU basketball as closely as most of Lawrence and I don't know this year's players so I don't know how Taylor ranks on the team, but I imagine even Wilt Chamberlain had limited playing time as a sophomore back in the day. I'm sure he's welcome to transfer if that's what he wants, but it seems like he can either transfer to a school that will give him more playing time but has a great lesser chance of winning the Championship or he can transfer to a school with a chance of winning and probably have the same amount of playing time he gets at KU.

shadowbox66044 5 years, 6 months ago

The kid is only a sophomore, give him time....jeez!

Jersey_Girl 5 years, 6 months ago

BABBOY - ever hear of KU's Cinderella team and Danny Manning? Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan?

LivedinLawrence4Life 5 years, 6 months ago

Tyshawn is a great player on a team with a lot of other great players. I predict that he will keep getting better and get more minutes as the year goes on. I love watching him play as he creates excitement and does some incredible things on the court. It sounds like he'll need to prove himself on defense in order to get to show us his offense skills.

jonas_opines 5 years, 6 months ago

"But, it is clear to me that this NOT the best all time Ku team and people are starting to figure that out……"

'97 team probably takes that honor, and they lost in the Sweet 16 to Arizona, who won the championship.

jonas_opines 5 years, 6 months ago

. . . but what it means to me is that since most of the problems are because it's still a very young team overall. Which means we'll be good not just this year but probably for the next two or three years too.

Mike Ford 5 years, 6 months ago

I met tyshawn in wal-mart. good kid. played in jersey for coach hurley. he's stuck in a logjam of guards. btw, I saw the blizzard debacle against cornell. k-state is better than cornell. k=state will take one game from ku this season.

Jersey_Girl 5 years, 6 months ago

Okay, the headline and the story were updated at midnight, but the story update does not match the headline update.

Edward Daub 5 years, 6 months ago

Lets all give Tyshawn a break. He is a talented player and his contributions are vital for KU to achieve their ultimate goal, which is to win the NCAA Championship.

Scruggsy 5 years, 6 months ago

west virginia hawk- I agree that Taylor's contributions will be vital for KU, but NO WAY do I agree that people are being too hard on him. He is starting to worry me that he feels his goals/ attention are more important than the team's. And that does not help come March...

Coach Self is obviously really upset with him for having to answer questions on this Facebook crap AGAIN. Anyway, Russell Robinson- if you're out there- will you please have a talk with this kid???

kujayhawk 5 years, 6 months ago

For his performance this year, Taylor is getting more than his fair share of minutes. Not sure what he's complaining about. You keep making dumb turnovers and bad passes, your butt should be on the bench.

Truth 5 years, 6 months ago

Taylor will shine next year when Collins is in the NBA. He needs to stay.

reserveseating 5 years, 6 months ago

Tyshaun Taylor had a lucky break last year, for one even being accepted to Kansas, You have to wonder if he hadnt turned the ball over so many times last year (which this year is triple that amount) would Kansas have gone on to a repeat. Please let Taylor leave if not for the fans for his sake. He would probably be happier in a D2 school where he belongs.

jaywalker 5 years, 6 months ago

''97 team probably takes that honor, and they lost in the Sweet 16 to Arizona, who won the championship

this is an old string so you probably won't see it jonas, but you da man.
