Exaggeration

To the editor:

Some rules of proper English are quite simple. In order to use the plural of any word, there must be at least two in number of the item pluralized. Saturday’s front page contained an article relating to a “tea party” event held in Topeka at which our local representative, Lynn Jenkins, “whipped up a crowd of about a hundred people.” Although there are no strict rules as to what number of people justifies the use of the word “crowd,” there is nothing to justify the language of the headline of this article which read “Hundreds rally against federal mandates.”

It would have been more accurate for the headline to read “Dozens rally against federal mandates.” I suppose the more accurate headline would not serve the purposes of the writer and editor of the article or the promoter and supporters of the “tea party” movement. It is nice to know that we in Lawrence are safe from that “left leaning liberal media.”
