Fun experience

To the editor:

Congratulations to Kansas University and the other local sponsors for providing thousands of Lawrence elementary schoolchildren attractive T-shirts, lunch, water bottles and an exciting college women’s basketball game. As a transplanted Northeasterner, I was thrilled Tuesday to observe something I have never seen before.

We, several residents of Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, were surrounded by well-behaved, very enthusiastic kids whose energy was encouraged by the KU cheerleaders and gymnasts. Even the half-time entertainment by basketball gymnasts was exciting for all of us. We regretted the outcome of the game but were thankful for a fun-filled experience, knowing there are several thousand more Jayhawk fans.

Nancy must have sat next to the kids that got fed at lunchtime. It was a disaster for the kids at two westside elementary schools. There were not enough lunches and they didn't get fed until after the game. That's right - no food for growing kids from breakfast until 2pm. The concession stands wouldn't serve anyone in those "attractive" blue shirts so even the parent chaperones couldn't buy food for the kids. I understand that the administration knew about the shortage before the buses were loaded to go to KU and they didn't tell any parents or come up with a back-up plan.

And on top of it, the kids couldn't get on the buses after the game - they had to sit and watch a cartoon movie, Space Jam. In the past, students missed school for this game but got to participate in activities before the game that focused on nutrition and exercise. This year, they watched a movie instead.

There is lots of fingering pointing on this - Jason's deli got the date wrong, KU didn't confirm the lunch orders, USD497 didn't try to solve this problem or ensure that this was an educational event. But dominos delivers in 30 minutes, right?

Next year, let's just cut the school year a day shorter and give teachers and students a day off, rather than trying to boost KU athletic attendence for what has become a completely non-educational event.

Let's guess which parent is a nerd.

    2 legitimate concerns:
"Nancy must have sat next to the kids that got fed at lunchtime."
(the lunches were ready for nobody, btw. according to your own letter.
we are just lucky that no medical concerns arose because of this "snafu".)
"the kids couldn't get on the buses after the game - they had to sit and watch a cartoon movie, Space Jam."
(can't do that in a public classroom. good thing the women's basketball game isn't a public classroorm)

    AND ONE incredibly myopic concern:
"It was a disaster for the kids at two westside elementary schools."
    ok. so you're a west-sider.
perhaps it would surprise you that kids from every school in the district (except maybe the first 500-1000 served on time) experienced this same bad experience.
((maybe you believe that the children at new york, woodlawn, wakarusa valley, hillcrest, cordley, sunset hill and pinckney all got preferential lunches....))

all we really need to know is:
did scott morgan's kids get fed on time?
