Turnpike bridge blast set for 2 p.m. Tuesday

Another week, another blast along the Kansas Turnpike.

At 2 p.m. Tuesday, contractors are scheduled to demolish — with explosives — what remains of steel supports for an original Kansas River bridge at the edge of Lawrence.

The operation, which is dependent on favorable weather, should result in delays of up to 15 minutes for drivers along the turnpike, as the blast approaches.

Troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol will be expected to conduct “rolling roadblocks” to slow traffic in both directions, so that traffic can be kept off the new river bridge as the blast approaches.

Once the steel is removed for recycling, contractors still will need to remove concrete piers that supported the two original bridges that carried turnpike traffic for more than 50 years.

A new, second bridge is set to be built as part of an ongoing $130 million reconstruction and overhaul project for the turnpike as it cuts through and along the northern edge of Lawrence.
