Inquest to be scheduled in death of Haskell student who was incarcerated in Montana

Montana authorities are working to schedule an inquest in the death of Haskell Indian Nations University student A.J. LongSoldier, who died after being incarcerated in a county jail.

LongSoldier, 18, was being held in Hill County Jail, where a detention officer requested medical assistance for him on Nov. 22. He was taken by ambulance to Northern Montana Hospital in Harve, where he died.

Fergus County Coroner Dick Brown said Montana state statute requires a jury to decide the circumstances of any death that occurs while an inmate is in custody. Brown said the inquest would likely occur at the end of February or beginning of March.

LongSoldier, of Harlem, Mont., had been incarcerated on a warrant for contempt of court. He was a freshman at Haskell.
