Wheel genius: Road work this week

Lawrence

• The city of Lawrence reminds drivers that they may purchase parking passes valid in certain downtown parking lots for 2010. Annual passes cost $192, and quarterly passes are $50. Passes are valid at 10-hour parking meters and in long-term lots, including three levels of the city parking garage at 933 N.H. and in the lower level of the Riverfront parking garage at 600 N.H. The city also offers an annual “value pass,” for $160, that is valid for parking on the top level of the garage at 933 N.H.; in the lower level of the Riverfront parking garage; and in Lot 10 in the 1000 block of Vermont Street.

• Reconstruction work continues at the intersection of North Second and Locust streets, in North Lawrence. One lane of North Second remains closed for traffic heading south through the intersection. Both lanes are closed for traffic heading north. Northbound vehicles follow a detour that includes Elm, North Third, Locust and — crossing Union Pacific Railroad tracks — Lyon streets. State transportation officials expect the detour to last into late January.

• Drivers may face slow traffic periods as construction continues for a new U.S. Highway 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa. While the section in Douglas County remains an active work zone, the section in Franklin County is expected to open to traffic in the spring.

Douglas County

• Douglas County Road 9, or East 1500 Road, remains closed from the Kansas Turnpike to U.S. Highway 24-40. Crews hired by the Kansas Turnpike are continuing with their bridge-construction activities. The closure is scheduled to last until late spring.

U.S. Highway 69

• A section of U.S. Highway 69 in Wyandotte County, known as the 18th Street Expressway, continues to be limited to one lane in each direction from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily as crews work to paint the bridge. Work is expected to last into late March.
