Parenting model

To the editor:

With so much discussion about our tight educational budget, we really have a great opportunity to educate our kids — for free. One of the ways of training our kids, might be to encourage them to model local sports heroes. Except in some cases. A recent sports story refers to a Kansas University star as “a proud father.” Reference is made of a “day-trip back to Chicago” and another 3-year-old son.

“Fathering” takes a lot more time than a day-trip allows. I am saddened that Gary Bedore, who must be well aware of all the younger students who are looking for heroes in this town, at worst, didn’t abstain from writing that article at all. Or better yet, he missed the opportunity to give some indication of the tremendous responsibilities that bringing a child into this world entails. We, as parents and grandparents, would appreciate models who demonstrate positive parenting over the long haul.
