2010 Haiti Earthquake

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince on Jan. 12, causing widespread devastation in Haiti's capital and throughout the country.

Eudora residents are looking for volunteers to assist with an event during which they hope to package 300,000 meals for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Becky Sasse, a Eudora resident and an event organizer, said she and some friends came up with the idea after attending a similar event in El Dorado.

“I really felt like I wanted to do something when this opportunity came up,” Sasse said. “I wanted to do something hands-on.”

The event, Kaw Valley Feeding Haiti, is scheduled for March 6-7 at Eudora Elementary School, 801 E. 10th St. Volunteers may assist by showing up between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on March 6 and between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on March 7.

The residents are working with Numana, an international hunger relief organization. The charity works with the Salvation Army to deliver the meals to Haiti. Sasse said Numana has sponsored similar events across the state. Meals consist of rice, dried soy protein, dried vegetables and chicken flavoring.

The group is also looking to raise $90,000 to help pay for the costs of the meals. People interested in donating may contact Sasse by calling 550-9739.

I would rather prepare meals and donate money to the poor in this area...............

It's easier to give charity on Christmas or far away as it is then limited by a time or place. It doesn't just hang around and it can be anything you want it to be in your mind's eye. Stokes the ego and balms any guilt.

yankeevet: then do it and save us the moral commentary.

SFBayhawk: it also helps save lives and feed children. Again "thanks" for the moral commentary.

Way to go Sasse and Company! Keep up the good work.

"We are all God's Children, not just the ones on this side of the border."
Actually it looks like God's Children in USD 497, as well as every other one, could use some "nourishment".
Ya can make sure it's spent properly too!
