Save our district
To the editor:
Unfortunately, the reality is that even if the USD 497 school board manages to keep all schools open for the 2010-11 school year, the question of closing schools will resurface. Until the Kansas Legislature forthrightly addresses the current tax system, the problem of adequate public school funding will not go away.
Since 1982, at least in my memory, ongoing discussions have taken place in this district regarding school size. The teacher/student ratio in each classroom has been a high priority among educators and citizens participating in these discussions.
Certainly we all love our neighborhood schools. Right now, however, I’m rather concerned about how we are going to “Save Our District.”
