To the editor:
I believe a communitywide thank you ought to be extended to the Lawrence police for quickly providing safety to the overwhelming crowd of 1,200 that assembled to march to Save Our Neighborhood Schools on Saturday, Feb. 6. The police quickly and ably stopped traffic southbound on Massachusetts to provide adequate room for the march from Liberty Hall to South Park. It is not often that such spontaneous participation and powerfully displayed passions in a march occur, and the police handled it beautifully.
The sentiment from the march was clear: The Lawrence community is unified in ensuring that no schools close in response to the current budget shortfall. The Lawrence police responded to the expression of this sentiment by ensuring the well-being of the participating community. We all hope that the school board will respond in kind.

And thank you LPD for ensuring the safety of the remaining 90,000 residents while these folks killed a few hours of the day wanting to be recognized. Where have these1,200 people been rest of the time? Oh yes, voting for two ill conceived bond issues that have now gotten them to the mess the district is in.

What do you mean by 'this type of activity' - a parade for which the courtesy of an advance notification or the securing of proper permits from the city was not undertaken? An event which inconveniences many for the benefit of a few? You have the right to peaceably assemble, but that does not also come with the inherent right to obstruct traffic or the peaceable proceedings of others.

These naysayers are stuck to their computers, and can't be bothered with the real world. Take the march to Topeka!!!

" a parade for which the courtesy of an advance notification or the securing of proper permits from the city was not undertaken" There was at least one week's advance notification and how do you know the permit was not secured? Would the police escort a march that did not have a proper permit?

Is BOZO in Jail or what?? I really "Don't" miss him...
I would like to know if these demonstrator's had the proper permits. If not they should have been billy clubbed and arrested, maybe even using police dogs to quell the radicals. Maybe a fire hose to spray them down. then mace them after they are put in handcuffs. Haul em all off to jail.. Illegal assembly. Pedestrian in the roadway. I bet they would have found at least a pound of weed on them collectivley.

Unfortunately, yes. Because the group was likely marching in disobedience of traffic and pedestrian laws, someone had to watch out for them, and that duty fell to LPD.

Cheeseburger, So, you've checked and you know for a fact that a permit had not been issued?

'Defender' and the likes of him would definitely disagree with you. Cops are nothing but low-life thugs who are all on the take. (According to his/their ignorant opinions.)
Fortunately not all of us are this paranoid and laking in intelligence. Thank you LPD (and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medial) for putting your lives on the line (even for the ingrates) 24/7/365.

I couldn't have described most LPD officers better!
Ah, you are a sycophantic "all cops are good, don't arrest me please, Mr Officer, sir!" LE lover.
