A nationally syndicated columnist is scheduled to visit Kansas University Friday to accept the William Allen White Foundation National Citation.

Leonard Pitts Jr. has written a syndicated column on music, social issues and family life since 1994 after he joined the Miami Herald in 1991 as a pop music critic. His column regularly appears in the Journal-World.

Pitts is scheduled to speak at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union. The speech is free and open to the public.

He won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, and has won numerous other awards and recognitions for his work.

His book, “Becoming Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood,” was first released in 1999, and he published his first novel, “Before I Forget,” in March 2009.

Now we just need Cal Thomas there and it would be an LJworld poster's dream.

    Indeed.

We already had a brawl outside the Burge this school year, why not have another one outside the Kansas Union?

I thought Leonard Pitts WAS Cal Thomas.

  4. Satirical (anonymous) says…

Lawrence should be extra nice to Pitts, otherwise he will call us all racists. It's his first and last defense to anything he opposes or dislikes?

  5. Newell_Post (anonymous) says…

Be careful. You guys will all show up in one of his columns...

  6. Newell_Post (anonymous) says…

How about the Leonard Pitts and George Will vs. Cal Thomas and Dolph Simons, Jr. tag-team debate? That would bring 'em out in droves.

  7. geekin_topekan (anonymous) says…

Only if Dolph is wearing tights.

Heck, throw in that nutjob Michele Malkin, just for good measure...yee-haw!

The title of this article leads me to believe that Mr. Pitts is going to speak on his thoughts about "friday" the day lol..

It is amazing that only commentators and pundits on the right are nutcases. How did that happen?

    they earned it...

Michele Malkin vs. Maureen Dowd, Pitts vs. Thomas, and George Will vs. the ghost of Molly Ivans.

Somebody is gonna throw the flyin' elbow ooooooooohhhh yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!

    Hey Tom & Barry,

Since I'm such a nice guy, I'll save each of you guys a seat!

I went to his speech a few years ago when he came. I thought he was articulate and amusing. And contrary to what some suggest, his first and only defense was not "blame it on whitey."

I wonder how many of you who are so quick to call him a racist will actually put aside your own prejudice and actually go and see him.

The guy has won a Pulitzer. He's coming to receive a major award, named after a Kansas journalistic giant. And, with a couple of exceptions, there's nothing in these comments but semi-racist snark. (and some not so semi-)

    Truly pathetic.

    I'd rather be fishing.

  17. Liberty275 (anonymous) says…

    "Truly pathetic."

What's truly pathetic is hero worship and waiting for other people to tell you what to think.

    Wilbur-

So the racism in Pitt's columns are okay I suppose.

  21. beatrice (anonymous) says…

Looks like a lot of people are a wee bit threatened by the coming visit. If anyone believes that Pitts' only line of defense is to cry racism hasn't been reading his columns.

Tom: "It is amazing that only commentators and pundits on the right are nutcases. How did that happen?"

    Lack of education, I presume.

  22. WilburM (anonymous) says…

Maybe a little common courtesy is in order. What would be wrong with that?

  23. cait48 (anonymous) says…

This is the internet. Most people have the common courtesy of Vlad the Impaler.
Except for Tom; he has the internet equivalent of ADD.

  24. Made_in_China (Paul R. Getto) says…

Good job, Mr. Pitts. You deserve the award. Welcome to Lawrence; just don't drink anything given you by a stranger, and/or a poster on this award winning LJW site.

  25. labmonkey (anonymous) says…

Bea, Wilbur, Porch, Cait, and China,

Would you be so high and mighty about showing courtesy and congratulatory of Cal Thomas, or Michelle Malkin if they were in town for winning an award? I highly doubt so knowing most of your posting histories.

  26. BigPrune (anonymous) says…

Al Gore won a Nobel Prize and so did Mein Fuhrer (for doing absolutely nothing). What's a prize these days?

  27. maxcrabb (anonymous) says…

Hey, I got a comment retracted! Careful folks, that copy and paste can be dangerous!

  28. labmonkey (anonymous) says…

    Porch-

I am a moderate and I am aware what they have written. That is why I refuse to comment on either Thomas's, Malkin's, or Pitts's articles because that would be showing them support in a way.

Have you read any of what Pitts writes? If a white person wrote some of the same things about a black person that he writes about white people, they would be branded a racist and never allowed paper space north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Your post has answered my question though. You only demand that courtesy be shown to those you agree with.
