Structure fire guts house southwest of Lecompton

Multiple rural Douglas County fire units responded to a structure fire Sunday evening at 1963 E. 175 Road southwest of Lecompton.

According to H. Wayne Riley, chief of Lecompton Fire-EMS, the homeowner came home about 9:30 p.m. to find the house filled with smoke.

Riley said the amount of damage and the cause hadn’t yet been determined, but he said it looked like the fire started in the basement. Riley said the inside of the house was gutted by the fire, but the outside of the house looked fine.

Riley said it took about two-and-a-half hours to extinguish the fire fully.

Units from Lecompton, Kanawaka and Wakarusa responded to the scene. A medic from Lawrence and a water tender from Shawnee Heights fire also came to the scene.
