• Senior creditors’ rights attorney Karen Nations has joined Pendleton & Sutton, Attorneys at Law, LLC. Nations concentrates her practice on creditors’ rights and remedies, representing commercial and retail clients in debt collection matters throughout the country. Before joining Pendleton & Sutton, Nations managed her own private practice focused on creditors’ rights.

• Col. Terry Maple, superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, announces master trooper Terry Berner and lieutenant Bradley Bernhardt, both retired from the patrol, effective Dec. 11.

Berner, a Lawrence resident, served more than 27 years. He was awarded a Silver Lifesaving Award from the Kansas Chiefs of Police Association in 1998. Bernhardt has been a resident of the Lawrence and Topeka area for most of his life and has served over 28 years.

• This year marks the 24th anniversary of Scotch Fabric Care’s Share the Warmth program. Scotch collected and cleaned 3,126 coats in Lawrence and 6,347 coats in Topeka. Scotch has collected and cleaned 202,756 coats to date.

• Terry Arthur, general counsel of Kansas Farm Bureau, will be the featured speaker at the Ag Stewardship Conference to be held Jan. 7 at Grace Community Church, 310 East Eight St. (Highway 56), Overbrook. The free one-day conference will begin at 9 a.m., with registration at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required before Dec. 30 by contacting the Conservation District in Lyndon at (785)828-3458.

• Pickleman’s Gourmet Café, a sandwich shop will be going into the former Ben & Jerry’s location, 818 Mass. According to information on its website, Pickleman’s specializes in toasted sandwiches but also offers thin-crust pizza, salads and soups. The restaurant also is expected to offer delivery.

• Oh Boy! Chicken, a new restaurant, is now open at 125 E. 10th St. The restaurant serves traditional fried chicken, Cajun fried chicken, fried catfish, country fried steak, along with sides such as mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, braised greens, dumplings and sweet potato fries. The restaurant also has an Asian flair, which comes from its owners who also own The Orient, 1006 Mass., and Anglers Seafood House, 1004 Mass.

• Gizmo Pictures, a Topeka-based film/video production company, has added Doug Stremel to their team in 2010. Stremel, former owner of BLAM in Lawrence, will contribute his years of producing and design experience as creative director.

• The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce will host its Legislative Affairs Preview Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 5 at Maceli’s, 1031 N.H. Elected officials at the city, county and state level will be participating, along with representatives from the school district and Kansas University. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers and may be purchased at lawrencechamber.com no later than Jan. 4.

• Nominations are being accepted for the 2011 Citizen of the Years Award. Each year the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce recognizes a Citizen of the Years — a community leader who has shown a lifetime commitment to the community. Forms must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. Thursday(Dec. 23) and are available online at lawrencechamber.com. The award recipient will be announced Jan. 28 at the chamber’s annual meeting to be held at the Lawrence Holidome.
