Man who robbed Lawrence Walmart at gunpoint takes $725

A man who used a handgun to rob Wal-Mart’s money center Monday night took $725 in cash before he escaped, according to a Lawrence police report made public Tuesday afternoon.

Police on Tuesday were still looking for the suspect who pulled a gun on several clerks about 9 p.m. Monday at the store, 3300 Iowa, and broke into the cash register at the booth used for cashing checks and other transactions.

The police report lists several Wal-Mart employees and an 18-year-old Kansas University student as the victims or witnesses to the robbery.

A Wal-Mart spokeswoman said company officials were thankful that no employees or customers were injured.

“We have provided security video to the local police department,” Wal-Mart spokeswoman Ashley Hardie said. “We’ll absolutely continue to cooperate with them in their investigation.”

Police on Monday night said the suspect demanded money from the clerks working behind the counter. When they were unable to open the drawer, the suspect broke into it and took the cash.

The suspect left the store, and police believe he got into a red or maroon station wagon. The car left the area and headed north on Ousdahl Road.

Police said witnesses told them the man wore a dark hat and scarf that concealed all of his face except his eyes. He also was wearing gloves and a long coat.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said detectives on Tuesday were still attempting to find and speak with witnesses.

Police urged anyone with information to call them at 785-832-7650 or Douglas County Crime Stoppers at 785-843-TIPS (8477).
