Gardner accident witnesses sought
Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking witnesses to Wednesday’s fatality crash in Gardner.
Anyone in the area of U.S. Highway 56 and New Century Parkway around 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office at 913-715-5560 or the TIPS hot line at 816-474-TIPS.
Investigators are especially wanting to talk with the driver of a full-size pickup in the area around the time of the crash.
The truck was described as a light color full-size pickup truck and had two noticeable markings on it. One was a decal on the rear bumper that had a picture of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt on it. The second is a sticker on the rear window that reads “In memory of Dale Earnhardt.”
Two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision at the intersection on Wednesday. A car, driven by Lisa Apperson, 41, collided with a pickup truck driven by Milton Whaley, 63.
Whaley and Hannah Apperson, 13, died as a result of injuries from the crash. Lisa Apperson and two other passengers — Cooper Apperson, 7, and Hailey Apperson, 10 — remain hospitalized. Everyone involved in the crash is from the Gardner area.
