Leawood businessman admits not paying $4.8 million in taxes

? A Leawood man admitted in federal court that he didn’t play almost $4.8 million in payroll taxes for companies he owns.

The U.S. Attorney announced in a news release that 41-year-old Jeffrey Phillips pleaded guilty Tuesday to withholding tax payments from employees’ pay from 2001 to 2005.

Prosecutors say Phillips owned JP Holdings, a Shawnee, Kan.-based company that was the sole or primary shareholder for several other companies. Many of the companies worked with nursing homes or in-home nursing services in Kansas and Missouri. Phillips also owned a meat processing plant in El Dorado, Kan., and raised purebred show cattle near McClouth, Kan.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 1. He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine up to $250,000, plus restitution.
