Prostitution sting nabs 29 men, eight women in Johnson County

Law enforcement officers have arrested a number of men and women for soliciting and promoting prostitution in Shawnee, De Soto and Merriam.

The three-day sting, conducted last week, caught 29 men for soliciting prostitutes and eight women for promoting prostitution, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office announced today.

In addition to the prostitution arrests, the sheriff’s office arrested two persons for drug-related charges and seized more than $4,800.

In addition to Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies, police officers from Shawnee, Merriam, Prairie Village and Overland Park assisted in the operation.

The county conducts such stings from time to time and will continue to do so in the future, Sheriff Frank Denning said in the announcement.

“Prostitution is not a crime we think of as occurring in Johnson County, but with the number of arrests made it is very evident that it is here,” he said. “We will continue to assist in joint endeavors such as this, in order to curtail this type of activity in our community.”

Here’s a breakdown of where the arrests were made:

• Shawnee: Six arrested — three men accused of soliciting and three women accused of promoting prostitution.

• Merriam: 20 arrested — 17 men accused of soliciting and three women accused of promoting prostitution, as well as approximately $2,000 seized.

• De Soto: 11 arrested — nine men accused of soliciting and two women accused of promoting prostitution, with $1,030 seized.
