City football players honored by Sunflower League

Eight city football players were named 2010 All-Sunflower League selections, as voted by the league’s coaches.

Free State High senior offensive lineman Justin McCandless, also a standout at defensive tackle, was the lone city player to make the first team.

Five other Firebirds were named to the second team: senior running back Preston Schenck, junior receiver Desmond Wyatt, senior quarterback Dylan Perry, and senior linebackers Matt Cole and Nate Davis.

Perry, a dual threat option out of the backfield, rushed for 1,099 yards and 15 touchdowns, while passing for 1,124 yards and seven TDs.

Despite missing some time with a sprained ankle, Schenck finished with 751 yards rushing and six touchdowns, and added four return TDs (punt, kickoff, two interception returns) and one TD reception.

Wyatt was the Firebirds’ leading receiver with 24 catches for 417 yards and five touchdowns.

Lawrence High was represented by two second-team selections, senior offensive lineman Jamal Brown and junior receiver Anthony Buffalomeat.

Brown, the Lions massive, run-blocking right tackle, was also a standout on the defensive line, and Buffalomeat, though he missed three games while sick with mononucleosis, was one of the top pass-catchers for quarterback Brad Strauss.
