Jingle Bell Run comes to town Dec. 12: The North East Chapter of the Kansas Arthritis Foundation is holding the second annual “Jingle Bell Run” in Lawrence. The run will take place on Dec. 12 (Sunday), beginning at the Community Building (115 W. 11th St., Lawrence). Registration and packet pick-up is at 7 a.m. and the 5K run begins at 8:30 a.m. There is also a 1-mile family stroll. Firebird signs: Free State High senior Paige Rothwell recently signed a national letter of intent to play softball at Kansas Wesleyan. Rothwell is a three-year starter, was in the top five in four offensive categories and played in all 20 games for the Firebirds in 2010.

Area signing: Baldwin High linemen Jess Austin signed a letter of intent to continue his education and football career at Baker University.

Adult Sports Registrations: Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is taking team registration for adult winter basketball, dodgeball and volleyball through Dec. 10. For information, call 832-7920 or visit www.lprd.org.

Former Lions moving up: Former Lawrence High baseball players Aaron Rea and Andy Urban recently signed national letters of intent to join a pair of nearby Div. I baseball programs. Rea, a shortstop who spent the past season at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, signed a letter with Wichita State and will join the Shockers next year. Urban, a pitcher who attends Hutchinson Community College, signed with Creighton. Both Rea and Urban were key members of Lawrence’s state championship baseball team in 2009.

Dodgeball Tryouts: The National Dodgeball League will hold tryouts for its professional league from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at Central Junior High. NDL scouts will be in attendance. For information, contact Paul Santos at 550-7840.
