Stolen Amtrak train station sign located

The blue neon “Lawrence” sign that was taken from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe depot in east Lawrence has been recovered.

The sign had been missing for about a month, and a story on its disappearance appeared in Friday’s Journal-World.

A caller to the Journal-World on Friday evening reported that the sign was in Martin Park, in northwest Lawrence. The anonymous caller quickly rattled off instructions to locate the sign, saying that it was off a trail in a box marked “Merry Christmas.” The caller then wished “Merry Christmas” and hung up.

The information was relayed to Lawrence police, and an officer was sent to check out the tip.

Just over an hour later, around 9 p.m. Friday, the sign was delivered to Carey Maynard-Moody, president of the Depot Redux group that has been working to spruce up the train station to better accommodate Amtrak riders.

Maynard-Moody called the Journal-World to relay the good news, adding that a note was found with the sign wishing “Merry Christmas” and “signed” by Bill Self. She said the Depot Redux board had a meeting scheduled for this morning, so she could show off the sign.
