Brent Mowery, Lawrence, was awarded a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, cum laude, from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, during commencement exercises May 8. Mowery was also named to the dean’s list for spring 2010 semester at the university. Both were achieved by earning a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

Kyle Groen, De Soto, was named to the spring 2010 academic honors list at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, by earning a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher. Groen, the son of Ron and Christine Groen, is a junior and chemistry major.

Pittsburg State University announces area students who made the honor roll during the 2010 summer session.

Those on the All-A honor roll are: Tyler Farmer, De Soto; Felicia Goodison, Mitchell Grant, Mujahid Hassaballa, Lawrence; Tracy Naumann, Meriden; and Sylvia Rusk, Ottawa.

Samantha Wheeler, Lawrence, has been awarded the Hearst Fine Arts art scholarship for $300 from the Truman State University Foundation for 2010-2011. Wheeler is a senior at Truman State in Kirksville, Mo.

Karrigan Bork, formerly of Lawrence, was one of three University of California-Davis graduate students awarded fellowships for outstanding environmental scholarship from the Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation. Each student will receive $15,000 to help them complete their degrees and advance skills and expertise needed to address critical environmental challenges.

Bork, an environmental lawyer and doctoral candidate in the ecology graduate group, is currently working in the Genomic Variation Laboratory at UC Davis. He is a 1997 graduate of Lawrence High School and a 2002 graduate of Kansas University and completed a law degree at Stanford Law School in spring 2009. Bork is the son of Jean Shepherd of Lawrence and the late John Bork.

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) has awarded its annual Lisa Ramos Bland Memorial Scholarship to Stephanie Crandon of Lawrence.

GCSAA sponsors the annual grant named after Bland, a long-time GCSAA staff member who was killed in an auto accident on Sept. 16, 2000.

Crandon graduated from Lawrence Free State High School in May and is enrolled at Kansas University.
