Paving patchwork

To the editor:

I think our city is ripping us off. I’m speaking of the construction on Inverness Drive. It is being done is a patchwork fashion, sawing “bad” sections out, and replacing them with new concrete. The fallacy is that there is no “good” concrete. Yes, some did not have chunks missing, but it is still 30 or so years old and will surely began to fail just as the “bad” sections did.

I noticed today that a substantial portion of the new concrete is being jackhammered out because it had cracked already. Furthermore I notice sections where the old concrete is already splaying where it is seamed with the new. Soon those areas are likely to develop into potholes, leading to more patching.

The clear choice would have been to replace Inverness in its entirety. It may have cost a little more on the front end, but I believe would have saved money in the long run.
