Big Brothers & Big Sisters is in great need of volunteers for its Bigs In Schools program. Currently, there are more than 60 students on the waiting list for a Big Brother or Big Sister in elementary and junior high schools across the Lawrence school district. Mentors meet with their “Little” at the child’s school, often during a lunch hour, once a week, when school is in session.  Mentors must be at least 16 years old and be able to commit at least 30 to 60 minutes each week to their “Little.” Bigs In Schools is a great way to make a difference in a child’s life for students and professionals who might have somewhat limited schedules.  Required orientation sessions are 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays and noon Wednesdays at 1525 W. Sixth St. No reservation is required. Alternate times can be arranged by calling 843-7359.

Small World is in need of volunteers to support its outreach programs for international women and their children who are living in Lawrence. Potential positions include substitute lead teacher, hospitality chair, library assistant, teaching assistant, classroom assistant (in both adult and children’s classes) and nursery caregiver. Small World operates in accordance with KU’s fall and spring semesters, so these positions need to be filled as soon as possible as KU is officially in session. Trinity In-Home Care is in need of volunteers for its new Imagine … Drop-In Childcare program. All support activities will be performed on-site, including all activities normally associated with childcare, plus meal preparation, music activities, arts and crafts activities and more. Kennedy School is looking for two volunteers to provide childcare while parents attend PTO meetings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the following dates throughout the following school year: Sept. 9, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, Dec. 9, Jan. 13, Feb. 10, March 10, April 14 and May 12.
