• The KU Memorial Unions announces Oread Books, the general book store of the KU Bookstores at Kansas University, has transitioned into a new service called Jayhawk Ink. A grand opening of the new store is scheduled for Sept. 8.

• Sue Brown, director of the Vintage Park at Baldwin City Assisted Living Community, has received the NCAL (National Centers for Assisted Living) Director of the Year award. The national award recognizes an assisted living director who demonstrates innovation, achievement and capabilities in the provision of high quality person-centered care in a service-oriented culture in an assisted living community. Brown will be honored at the NCAL Day Awards Luncheon Oct. 10 at AHCA/NCAL’s annual convention in Long Beach, Calif.

• On Aug. 10, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the finalists for the 2010 National Citizen Corps Achievement Awards-Celebrating Resilient Communities; award winners will be announced in September as part of National Preparedness Month.

The Douglas County Citizen Corps Council was chosen as a national 2010 finalist in the category of Preparing the Public Award, in part because of its public education and outreach efforts throughout the county.
