100 years ago: Orphan seeking country parents has 2 couples to choose from

From the Lawrence Daily World for August 21, 1910: “If in after years Johnnie Stephenson has any complaint to make against his parents, it will be his own fault, for little Johnnie Stephenson has it ‘on’ other little boys in that he has a chance to pick out his own papa and mama. Johnnie is the 5-year-old lad from the Children’s Home at Kansas City, Kansas, who was one of the twenty-seven guests of the women of the Tauy Creek Baptist Church. After two weeks of rural life, Johnnie was a firm believer in the back to the farm movement, and just simply couldn’t think with complacency of returning to the orphan’s home. So he advertised for a pair of parents who lived in the country [see OHT for August 7, 1910]. Now he has found two sets of parents, open to his choice, and probably will try them out to see if they will suit. The first ones wanting to take the lad are Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hollingsworth of LeHunt, who saw the advertisement and wrote to the home asking to adopt the boy. Yesterday Mr. and Mrs. M. Eversoll of Route 5, Humboldt, wrote Mrs. H. G. Smith, Johnnie’s hostess for the two weeks, wanting to take the boy. The Eversolls have three little girls, but their little son died a short time ago.”
