100 years ago: Kansas City orphan places want ad seeking country parents

From the Lawrence Daily World for August 7, 1910:

“Mrs. Martha E. Hall of this city has brought suit for divorce against her husband, the Rev. I. S. Hall. She alleges that she had been forced to support him while he attended ball games, played checkers and otherwise amused himself. He was a poorer preacher than ball fan, and a worse husband than either, she alleges…. ‘WANTED–A nice pair of kind parents, who live in the country and have plenty of cows and horses and chickens, and lots of outdoors. Johnnie Stevenson.’ This isn’t a common want ad; it is the appeal from the heart of a 5-year-old city boy who has been in the country for twelve delicious days and whose heart is just breaking with the thought of having to go back to the Kansas City, Kansas, Orphans Home. Johnnie came into his own when he arrived at LeLoup a week ago for a two-week visit. He has been having the time of his life just watching the cows and feeding the chickens and carrying the cats about the yard and standing by the hour and gazing at the horses through the fence. So Johnnie, who is a sturdy little light-haired, hazel-eyed man of five years, has announced his intention of staying in the country and becoming a citizen of Franklin county. And Johnnie hopes that fate will be kind to him….”
